Senegal heads into the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations aiming to reclaim continental supremacy and reinforce its reputation as one of Africa’s premier footballing nations.
Under coach Pape Thiaw, appointed in December 2024, the Lions of Teranga enter a new cycle blending the experience of seasoned campaigners with the energy of emerging talent.
“We want to build on the legacy of the golden generation while injecting new energy,” Thiaw said ahead of the tournament.
The Senegalese coach has structured his team around defensive discipline, high pressing, and rapid transitions.
He relies on an experienced backline anchored by Kalidou Koulibaly, while forwards Sadio Mané, Ismaïla Sarr, and Nicolas Jackson provide pace, creativity, and finishing prowess to challenge opposing defenses.
Recent warm-up matches have highlighted the squad’s cohesion and attacking potency.
Senegal hammered Kenya 8-0, demonstrating efficiency and confidence, and showed resilience against Brazil in a 2-0 defeat, proving their ability to compete with elite international teams.
Thiaw balances experience with youth, depending on veterans such as Idrissa Gueye, Pathé Ciss, and Édouard Mendy, while integrating promising newcomers including Pape Matar Sarr, Rassoul Ndiaye, Assane Diao, and Antoine Mendy.
This mix aims to maintain Senegal’s competitive edge while fostering the next generation of talent.
Ranked 19th in the FIFA world rankings and second in Africa behind Morocco, Senegal enters AFCON 2025 as one of the favorites.
The Lions of Teranga face Botswana on December 23, the Democratic Republic of Congo on December 27, and Benin on December 30 in Group D.
“The AFCON is a difficult tournament and we must arrive ready, strong and focused. The group is fully aware of this: we are going to Morocco with ambition and determination,” Thiaw added.
With a decorated history that includes a 2002 World Cup quarter-final, AFCON finals in 2002 and 2019, the 2021 continental title, and the 2022 CHAN victory, Senegal approaches the 2025 tournament intent on continuing its ascent and offering fans a new chapter in its golden footballing era.
