DR Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre has vowed that his side will carry the same determination and collective spirit into the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as they begin their campaign against Benin.
Speaking on the eve of the Leopards’ opening group match, the Frenchman underlined his belief in continuity, insisting that recent positive performances must now be translated onto the continental stage.
Addressing the media in Rabat on Monday, Desabre reflected on the momentum built in recent months and the responsibility his squad carries as they step into Africa’s biggest international tournament.
He was keen to reassure supporters that the team’s approach would not change, regardless of the occasion or pressure that comes with it.
“I want to say a word to the fans: we managed to make them happy in November, the players were fantastic, and we will have the same mindset for them during this AFCON,” Desabre said, reinforcing his confidence in the group’s mentality and preparation.
The coach stressed that the Africa Cup of Nations demands consistency as much as quality, particularly in the opening fixtures.
For Desabre, maintaining focus and emotional balance will be crucial as the Leopards aim to build a solid foundation in their first match.
He also highlighted the importance of staying true to the principles that have guided the team’s recent progress, rather than being distracted by expectations or external pressure.
Alongside him at the press conference, captain Chancel Mbemba echoed that message while placing emphasis on the role of supporters.
The experienced defender spoke candidly about the intensity of the tournament and the added motivation that comes from backing at home and abroad.
“We need support,” Mbemba said, making a direct appeal to fans as DR Congo prepare to take the field.
His words reflected an understanding of how decisive public backing can be in a competition where fine margins often separate success from disappointment.
Mbemba also underlined the sense of responsibility within the squad, insisting that the players are fully aware of what is required of them.
“We’re going to do the job on the field,” he added, a statement that summed up the captain’s focus on action rather than talk.
For DR Congo, the clash with Benin represents more than just an opening fixture.
It is an opportunity to confirm the progress made under Desabre and to set the tone for the rest of the group stage.
The Leopards are determined to combine discipline with ambition, knowing that a strong start can shape confidence and belief for the matches ahead.
The encounter will take place on Tuesday, December 23, at 12:30 GMT at the Al-Barid Stadium in Rabat.
As the countdown continues, the message from the Congolese camp is clear: consistency, commitment and unity will guide their journey at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
