FECAFOOT president Samuel Eto’o has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Senegal coach Pape Thiaw’s reaction during Senegal’s tense AFCON clash against Morocco, calling for calm, accountability, and better use of technology in high-pressure matches.
Speaking to France 24, Eto’o revealed that he himself had previously been sanctioned with a four-match ban after refusing to take an emotional decision during a similar situation.
“I was sanctioned for four matches because I refused to make that decision,” Eto’o said, referring to pressure he faced to withdraw his team during an emotionally charged encounter.
Recalling the intensity of the Morocco match, Eto’o acknowledged that emotions can easily spiral out of control during major tournaments.
“At one point, one of my compatriots suggested I withdraw the team. On impulse, I could’ve made that decision.” However, the former Cameroon captain said he does not blame the Senegalese coach for his reaction.
“On the contrary, he had the courage to defend his team. You’ve got to take those risks,” Eto’o stated, adding that Senegal’s eventual victory is what matters most.
While calling for investigations into what went wrong, Eto’o emphasized the need for officials to assume responsibility and for football authorities to reduce emotional tension through clearer decision-making.
He pointed to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) as a key tool in restoring trust during controversial moments.
“It doesn’t cost us anything to check the facts of the game. If we check the facts, our emotions will be better controlled.”
Eto’o’s comments come as debates continue across African football over refereeing standards, emotional management on the touchline, and the role of VAR in decisive tournament matches.
