Sadio Mane led Senegal’s recovery with a calm finish that secured a 1-1 draw against DR Congo and kept the holders on course in Group D at the Africa Cup of Nations.
The result leaves Senegal on top of Group D on goal difference while DR Congo stay close behind after a disciplined display.
Senegal began on the front foot and controlled long spells of the first half, moving the ball quickly and pressing up the pitch. Clear chances were rare though, and the opening period ended without much threat in either box.
After the break the tempo lifted. DR Congo grew in confidence, pushed higher, and were rewarded when a fast counter attack ended with Cedric Bakambu finishing from close range. The goal lifted the Congolese side and unsettled Senegal.
The response was measured. Sadio Mane found space on the edge of the area and guided a low shot into the corner to restore parity. Both teams chased a winner but neither could find the final touch.
Senegal will play Benin on December 30th at the Grand Stade de Tanger. DR Congo, on the same day, will play Botswana at the Al Medina Stadium.
