Mahrez voices confidence as Algeria embrace AFCON 2025 challenge in Morocco
Riyad Mahrez has expressed strong satisfaction with Algeria’s arrival in Morocco for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, insisting that the squad feels motivated and fully committed to delivering a positive tournament.
Speaking ahead of Algeria’s Group E opener against Sudan, Mahrez highlighted the positive atmosphere surrounding the team and praised the reception they received on arrival.
The Algerian captain addressed the media at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, where Algeria will begin their campaign on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
“We received a warm welcome and we feel very comfortable here,” Mahrez said. “We are happy to be in Morocco and excited to take part in a competition of this level. Every player wants to give everything to achieve a strong performance.”
The Al Ahli winger stressed the importance of making a convincing start, especially after Algeria endured disappointing exits at the last two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
Mahrez acknowledged that recent history weighs heavily on the team but described the current competition as a chance to correct past mistakes.
“It is very important to start this tournament well,” he explained. “We did not get the results we wanted in the last two AFCON editions, but this tournament gives us the opportunity to respond and show our true level.”
Mahrez pointed to the blend of youth and experience within the Algerian squad as a key strength.
He noted that several young players now form part of the group, while established figures provide guidance and stability in high-pressure moments.
“This team includes young players and experienced veterans,” he said. “We are ready for this competition. Everyone understands their role and the responsibility that comes with wearing the national shirt.”
The former Manchester City star also addressed the issue of pressure, describing it as an unavoidable part of elite football. He insisted that the players accept expectations and remain focused on their objectives.
“Pressure always exists in football,” Mahrez added. “All the players know that and accept it. We concentrate on our work and prepare seriously for every match.”
Algeria will face Sudan in their opening Group E fixture, while the group’s other match will see Burkina Faso take on Equatorial Guinea earlier on Wednesday. That encounter will kick off at 1:30 pm at the Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca.
With confidence in the camp and a clear sense of purpose, Algeria enter the tournament aiming to set a positive tone from the opening match and reassert themselves among Africa’s leading football nations.
