AFCON 2025: Riyad Mahrez named Man of the Match in Algeria’s win against Sudan

Riyad Mahrez earned Man of the Match honors in Algeria’s dominant 3-0 win over Sudan at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025.

The Fennecs captain scored twice, powering his team to their first finals victory since the 2019 title in Cairo.

Algeria struck early at Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat. Just two minutes in, Mahrez slotted home a precise pass from Hicham Boudaoui, setting the tone against a stunned Sudan side.

Sudan’s night worsened in the 39th minute when Salah El-Din Adel picked up a second yellow, leaving them with ten men. Algeria capitalized after halftime, with Mahrez netting his second in the 61st from Mohamed Amine Amoura’s fine assist.

Substitute Ibrahim Maza sealed the rout in the 85th minute off a Baghdad Bounedjah pass. The result puts Algeria atop Group E alongside Burkina Faso, both on three points, while Sudan and Equatorial Guinea remain pointless.

Algeria will play Burkina Faso in their next group E game on December 28th.
