Egypt will have to cope without right back Mohamed Hany in their next AFCON 2025 group match against Angola, after his red card against South Africa triggered an automatic suspension.
The defender was sent off just before half time for two yellow cards in Egypt’s hard-fought 1–0 win on Friday, leaving the Pharaohs to play the entire second half with ten men.
The dismissal sparked heated scenes on the touchline, with South Africa coach Hugo Broos exchanging angry words with Egypt boss Hossam Hassan and members of his staff as emotions boiled over.
The incident raised immediate questions among fans about how long Hany would be out and whether his AFCON campaign might be in serious jeopardy.
Tournament regulations provide some relief for Egypt, confirming that Hany will miss only one game, the clash with Angola, before becoming eligible again from the round of 16.
Egypt have already booked their place in the knockout stages with six points from two victories over Zimbabwe 2–1 and South Africa 1–0, easing some of the pressure created by Hany’s absence.
