With the qualifiers nearing completion, 21 teams have officially booked their places for the much-anticipated TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, set to take place in Morocco.
On Monday’s Matchday 6, two more teams, Sudan and Benin, clinched their spots, bringing the total number of qualified nations to 21. They join a growing list of African football heavyweights who have already secured their places in the tournament.
In earlier rounds, Nigeria, Tunisia, South Africa, Uganda, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon all earned their qualifications, showcasing strong performances. Zambia, Mali, Zimbabwe, and Comoros were also successful last week, further adding to the lineup of competing nations.
The list of qualified teams features a mix of seasoned AFCON participants and emerging football forces. Host nation Morocco automatically qualifies, while prominent teams like Senegal and Algeria secured their spots early with consistent displays throughout the qualifiers. Egypt and reigning champions Côte d’Ivoire also made it through, both bringing rich AFCON histories and numerous titles.
Among the teams making a comeback are DR Congo, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea, all aiming to make a significant impact in the tournament. Uganda and Gabon have also returned with ambitions of advancing far into the competition. For South Africa, this qualification marks a triumphant return to Africa’s premier football stage following a solid showing in the previous edition held in Côte d’Ivoire.
However, the qualification journey isn’t over just yet. The final set of Matchday 6 fixtures will be played on Tuesday, with three remaining spots still up for grabs. The anticipation is building as top African sides and emerging challengers prepare for the decisive matches that will complete the 24-team lineup for AFCON 2025.
Football fans across the continent are eager to see which teams will seize the last available tickets to join the action in Morocco.
