Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has called for maximum focus ahead of his side’s Round of 16 encounter against Sudan at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, warning that the match will be far from straightforward against a disciplined and well-organised opponent.
Speaking ahead of the knockout clash, Thiaw acknowledged Sudan’s strength in defensive structure and rapid transitions, noting that their ability to move quickly from defence to attack could present serious challenges for the Lions of Teranga.
He stressed that Senegal’s preparations have been tailored to address those threats, with a strong focus on defensive solidity and improved efficiency in the final third.
The Senegal boss also revealed that work has been done on both the physical and mental aspects of the game, underlining the importance of readiness for a match that will usher in the knockout phase of the continental showpiece.
Drawing on his familiarity with the Sudanese team from two previous meetings, Thiaw reiterated that their compact organisation and swift counter-attacking style demand respect and careful planning.
Thiaw also addressed the absence of defensive leader Kalidou Koulibaly, who will miss the game through suspension.
While admitting the defender’s absence is significant, he expressed confidence in the depth of his squad, pointing out that Senegal arrived in Morocco with a full complement of 28 players capable of stepping up when called upon.
Group D winners Senegal will take on Sudan, who advanced as one of the best third-placed teams from Group E, in a fixture that will kick off the Round of 16.
