Senegal coach Pape Thiaw reassured fans on Tuesday morning that midfielder Habib Diarra has officially joined the squad ahead of the Lions of Teranga’s Group D opener against Botswana.
The 21-year-old Sunderland player, sidelined since September due to a groin injury, rejoined the team on Monday, bringing renewed options to Senegal’s midfield.
Thiaw addressed Diarra’s late arrival during a press conference, emphasizing the smooth coordination between medical teams.
“In Habib Diarra’s case, communication makes things easier. It was handled very well; he joined us yesterday,” Thiaw stated.
He highlighted the close collaboration with Sunderland’s medical staff and Diarra’s personal physiotherapist, underlining the importance of seamless rehabilitation for the young midfielder.
The Senegalese squad now prepares with nearly all players on board, with Diarra becoming the penultimate addition.
Ousseynou Niang, who replaces Assane Diao following the latter’s withdrawal due to injury, is expected to join the team later Tuesday.
Thiaw confirmed the squad is ready to maintain depth across key positions despite last-minute adjustments.
When pressed about past disagreements with Como coach Fabregas over Diao’s participation, Thiaw declined to revisit the matter.
His focus remains squarely on ensuring the squad is match-ready for the tournament.
Diarra’s return represents a boost for Senegal, adding creativity and stability in the midfield ahead of a crucial first-round encounter.
The coaching staff continues to monitor his fitness closely, balancing game readiness with careful management of his recent recovery.
As Senegal gears up for its AFCON 2025 campaign, integrating Diarra and other late arrivals will be key to sustaining tactical balance and building momentum.
Fans will watch closely to see how the midfielder adapts after a long spell on the sidelines, while the team looks to assert dominance in Group D from the opening match.
