Morocco has announced the introduction of a temporary electronic travel authorization system for Senegalese nationals ahead of the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the Kingdom will host from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.

The measure, confirmed by the Moroccan embassy in Senegal, will be in effect from 25 September 2025 until 25 January 2026. Designed to simplify entry procedures and enhance security, the initiative represents an unprecedented step in facilitating the arrival of supporters and visitors during the tournament.

According to the embassy, Senegalese fans travelling specifically to attend AFCON matches will need to apply through the Royal Moroccan Football Federation’s official “YALLA” application. Meanwhile, those entering the country for business, tourism, or family visits must complete their application through the Moroccan government’s designated online portal.

Not all travellers will be subject to the new requirement. Holders of diplomatic, special, or official passports are exempt, as are residents of Morocco, passengers in transit, spouses of Moroccan citizens, and individuals over the age of 55.

The decision to implement the temporary system is framed as a gesture both of practicality and solidarity. The embassy noted that the aim was not only to guarantee efficient organisation and heightened security during Africa’s most prestigious football competition but also to highlight Morocco’s commitment to promoting African unity.

This will be the first time Morocco has introduced such a measure specifically for nationals of another African country in the context of a sporting event. Authorities believe it will streamline arrivals during the competition, given the expected influx of thousands of Senegalese supporters eager to follow their team throughout the tournament.

Once the tournament concludes, the temporary travel authorisation will expire on 25 January 2026, and the usual entry procedures will be reinstated. Officials stressed that this timeline ensures a smooth return to normal border regulations while maintaining order during the month-long event.

The initiative also reflects Morocco’s broader preparations for hosting AFCON, as the country positions itself to showcase its organisational capabilities ahead of co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup. With infrastructure projects, stadium upgrades, and logistical arrangements already underway, the electronic travel authorisation is seen as part of a wider effort to guarantee a successful and secure tournament.

For Senegalese fans, the measure offers both easier access and reassurance, with digital tools centralising the application process and providing transparency. Authorities in Dakar and Rabat have both encouraged supporters to submit applications well in advance to avoid delays.

With the Lions of Teranga expected to be among the tournament favourites, Morocco’s gesture is likely to encourage a strong contingent of travelling fans, adding to the electric atmosphere that has come to define AFCON competitions.

As the countdown to the 2025 edition begins, the special travel system underscores Morocco’s determination to balance innovation, security, and hospitality while reinforcing its role as a central hub for African football.
