AFCON 2025: Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi hoping to recover on time for opener against Comoros
Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi is optimistic about making his return for the opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking to French outlet L’Équipe, Hakimi expressed confidence that he will recover in time to face Comoros in Morocco’s tournament opener.
However, his club, Paris Saint-Germain, is approaching the situation with caution. PSG’s medical staff have raised concerns over whether Hakimi will reach full fitness by the start of AFCON, preferring a measured approach to his return.
The 26-year-old sustained a serious ankle injury on November 4 during a Champions League clash with Bayern Munich. Since then, he has been following a rigorous rehabilitation plan aimed at getting him ready for the continental tournament.
While the injury was significant, Hakimi’s commitment and discipline have fueled hope that he could return sooner than initially expected.
The situation highlights the recurring tension between clubs and national teams. For Morocco, Hakimi is not just a world-class defender but also a key leader on the pitch.
His presence in the opening match would provide a morale boost and strengthen the squad.
For PSG, however, the priority is safeguarding his long-term health as they pursue another Champions League campaign following last season’s historic success.
Hakimi was instrumental in Morocco’s remarkable run to the semi-finals at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar—the first African team ever to reach that stage. Known for his attacking prowess and defensive reliability, he is widely regarded as one of the top full-backs in world football.
With AFCON fast approaching, Moroccan supporters are eagerly awaiting his return. The match against Comoros will not only test the team’s readiness but also mark a potential homecoming for their star captain.
The AFCON has been scheduled to kick off from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
