Mohamed Salah wrote a new chapter in his legendary story with Egypt after scoring a dramatic last-minute winner against Zimbabwe in the opening match of Group B at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The captain struck in the 90th minute to complete a precious comeback and secure three vital points for the Pharaohs at the start of their campaign.

With this goal, Salah became the first Egyptian player ever to score in five consecutive AFCON editions, having previously found the net in the 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023 tournaments before adding his latest strike in Morocco. The Liverpool star also lifted his personal tally to eight goals in the competition.

That second milestone allowed him to surpass Egypt greats Hassan El Shazly and Taher Abou Zeid, drawing level with former captain Ahmed Hassan on the national team’s all-time AFCON scoring chart.

The third record brings him closer than ever to becoming Egypt’s outright top scorer in all competitions, as he now sits just six goals behind his current national coach Hossam Hassan, who leads the historical standings with 69 goals. Every strike from now on moves Salah nearer to a landmark that once seemed untouchable.
