AFCON 2025: Mohamed Salah closing in on historic Egypt records

Africa Cup of Nations 2025 in Morocco could redefine Mohamed Salah’s legacy with Egypt, both in trophies and in the record books.

The Liverpool star still chases a first AFCON title after losing two finals in 2017 and 2021, and hopes to avoid the fate of legends like Drogba and Asamoah Gyan who never lifted the trophy with their countries.

Beyond the cup itself, Salah stands just 6 goals away from two huge milestones. He has 63 international goals, while Egypt’s all-time top scorer, and now national coach, Hossam Hassan sits on 68. Scoring six at this tournament would give Salah the outright national scoring record and crown him the most prolific Pharaoh in history.

AFCON offers a second target as well. In tournament goals for Egypt, Hassan El‑Shazly leads with 12, followed by Hossam Hassan with 11, while Salah currently has 7. Another six goals in Morocco would make him Egypt’s top AFCON scorer too, rewriting a chapter dominated for decades by past greats.

Egypt play in Group B with South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe, starting against Zimbabwe on 22 December at 10:00 pm. For Salah, every minute on the pitch brings him closer to both long-awaited silverware and records that would stand for generations.
