Egypt legend Mohamed Aboutrika has reflected on the Pharaohs’ elimination from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, admitting the team fell short of its potential in the semi-final defeat to Senegal.
The former international shared his thoughts following the narrow 1-0 loss that ended Egypt’s quest for an eighth continental title.
Speaking in televised remarks on beIN SPORTS, Aboutrika expressed disappointment over the outcome while acknowledging the ambitions Egypt carried into the tournament.
“Of course, I am sad about the exit of the Egyptian national team, but this was the goal set before the tournament. The Egyptian national team has 7 titles in the Africa Cup of Nations, and we hoped to add a new title, but God’s will be done,” he said.
The former midfielder was candid in his assessment of Egypt’s performance against Senegal, insisting the squad had the quality to deliver more on the pitch.
“We have the ability and talent to play better football than we did, especially in the Senegal match. Hard luck to the Egyptian national team, and good luck to the Moroccan national team. I hope they reach the final,” Aboutrika added.
The semi-final clash between Egypt and Senegal was played at the Ibn Battouta Stadium in Tangier, Morocco, with the Teranga Lions edging the contest thanks to a late goal from Sadio Mané in the 78th minute.
The result brought Egypt’s dream of winning their eighth title to an end.
