Sudan coach James Kwesi Appiah expressed delight after his team’s hard-fought 1-0 win over Equatorial Guinea, their first AFCON victory in over a decade.
The Falcons of Jediane overcame a freezing Casablanca night and intense pressure to secure an own goal in the 74th minute from Equatorial Guinea’s Saul Coco.
Appiah praised his players’ resilience following a tough opening loss. “I am happy with the win, but our ambition is to win the title, not just to achieve a single victory,” he said. He highlighted their experienced squad’s strong showing despite challenges, noting they always aim to deliver quality football.
The result levels Sudan with Group E leaders, setting up a crucial final match against Burkina Faso. Appiah thanked supportive fans and stressed the bigger goal.
“When you take part in any tournament, the main ambition is to get through the group stage and go as far as possible. We achieved what mattered most, and we are mindful of these objectives of reaching the furthest stage possible. We are not here to just participate.”
This victory symbolizes hope for Sudan amid national struggles, boosting morale ahead of New Year’s Eve.
