Mozambique stormed to a historic first-ever win at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Sunday after battling to defeat Gabon 3-2 in a thrilling Group F encounter.
After suffering defeat to Ivory Coast in their opening game at the 2025 AFCON, Mozambique responded with an impressive first-half display, scoring twice before the interval.
Faizal Bangal opened the scoring with a well-placed header before Geny Catamo calmly converted from the penalty spot to give his side a commanding advantage.
Gabon responded through former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who reduced the deficit before the break. However, Diogo Calila restored Mozambique’s two-goal cushion in the second half, a strike that ultimately proved decisive despite Alex Moucketou-Moussounda pulling one back late on.
