The Confederation of African Football’s Disciplinary Committee will hear the case involving the national teams of Senegal and Morocco on Tuesday, following the dramatic events of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.
According to a source, the Senegalese federation requested additional time to finalise its defence concerning what transpired during the final match. CAF’s sanctions committee accepted the request and rescheduled the hearing for tomorrow, Tuesday.
The same source added that the Moroccan Football Federation agreed to the postponement, with the newspaper describing the upcoming session as decisive, given the sensitivity of the case, the legal complexities involved and the growing intensity of media debate.
The hearing relates to incidents that overshadowed the AFCON 2025 final, which Senegal went on to win for the second time in their history after defeating hosts Morocco 1-0. The match was marked by a series of dramatic moments late in regulation time that sparked controversy and unrest.
As the game appeared headed for extra time, Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala disallowed a goal for Senegal before awarding a late penalty to Morocco following a VAR review.
The decision triggered strong protests from Senegalese players and officials, with head coach Pape Thiaw instructing his team to leave the pitch in objection to the call. Tensions escalated further as some Senegalese supporters descended from the stands, leading to disturbances inside the stadium.
Play was halted for several minutes after the Lions of Teranga had already exited the field, before captain Sadio Mané intervened and urged his teammates to return and complete the match. Once play resumed, Morocco’s Diaz stepped up to take the penalty but attempted a Panenka-style effort that was easily saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Following the missed penalty, the referee brought the match to the end of regulation time, sending both teams into extra time. Senegal eventually sealed the title when Pape Gueye scored a powerful strike in the 94th minute, which proved to be the decisive goal of the final.
In the aftermath, the Moroccan Football Federation formally requested sanctions against the Senegalese national team for leaving the pitch, as well as for the conduct of their supporters.
CAF is continuing its investigations into the matter and is expected to deliver a final ruling after the rescheduled hearing.
