AFCON 2025: El Hadji Diouf calls on fans to power Algeria’s campaign

El Hadji Diouf has urged Algerian supporters to rally behind the national team as it prepares for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, stressing that popular backing will be decisive for the Fennecs as they seek to reassert themselves on the continental stage.

With the tournament approaching, the former international highlighted the unique bond between Algeria’s players and their fans, describing public support as a defining feature of the team’s identity.

“We need the Algerian public in every competition. They are a very passionate crowd, one we love dearly. As a footballer, I also have a fiery temperament and I love the Algerian public,” Diouf said, underlining the emotional connection he believes can lift the team at crucial moments.

Algeria arrive at this AFCON with unfinished business.

Despite lifting the trophy in 2019, they suffered disappointing early exits at the 2021 and 2024 editions, results that left a sense of frustration among players and supporters alike.

Those setbacks have since prompted change, with the appointment of Vladimir Petkovic signalling the start of a new chapter.

Under the new coach, Algeria have shown encouraging signs.

Momentum has gradually returned, and qualification for the 2026 World Cup has already been secured, a significant milestone after missing out on the previous two tournaments.

That progress has restored confidence, but it has not erased all doubts.

Questions remain over how the Fennecs will cope against elite opposition, having had limited opportunities to test themselves at the highest level in recent years.

The Africa Cup of Nations will therefore act as a measuring stick for Petkovic’s project, offering a clearer picture of the team’s true level.

It is in this context that Diouf’s appeal takes on added weight.

For him, the Algerian public represents more than noise in the stands; it is an emotional force capable of influencing matches and inspiring belief.

With the tournament set to be played in Morocco, Algerian fans are expected to travel in numbers, ensuring the team feels supported far from home.

As Algeria look to turn promise into results, Diouf’s message is simple: with the full backing of their supporters, the Fennecs can rediscover the edge that once made them champions.
