A moment of sheer brilliance from Sadio Mané proved decisive on Wednesday night as Senegal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Egypt to book their place in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Teranga Lions delivered a composed and disciplined performance, with Mané’s stunning late strike separating the two continental giants in a tense semi-final encounter.
Senegal set the tone early in the contest, dominating possession and showcasing impressive teamwork. Their passing game stood out in the opening minutes, with a blend of long balls, short exchanges and sharp one-two combinations making it difficult for Egypt to get a foothold or intercept play.
The Lions of Teranga continued to apply pressure as the first half progressed. Iliman Ndiaye came close to making an impact midway through the half after embarking on a promising solo run, but his effort was well blocked by the Egyptian defence, resulting in a goal kick. Egypt had a rare attacking moment just before the break when Mohamed Salah delivered a lofted cross from a free kick, but the attempt lacked precision and sailed out of play.

After the interval, Senegal maintained their control of the game while probing for an opening. Idrissa Gueye tried his luck from distance in the 57th minute after beating his marker, but his low effort was comfortably gathered by Mohamed El Shenawy in the Egyptian goal. Ndiaye remained lively and nearly broke the deadlock again in the 74th minute when he struck a first-time shot from the edge of the box, only to see it drift wide of the left post.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 78th minute through Senegal’s talisman. Sadio Mané picked up the ball on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a powerful strike that flew straight inside the left post, leaving El Shenawy with no chance. The goal sparked celebrations among the Senegalese players and fans, as it proved to be the decisive moment of the match.
