Egyptian midfielder Mohanad Lasheen suffered an injury setback in their final Group B game against Angola at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The 29-year-old, who plies his trade for Pyramids FC succumbed to a rib injury and has to be replaced in the 64th-minute mark by Mohamed Shehata, as Egypt played out a pulsating goalless draw against the Palancas Negras on Monday.
Having already booked a place in the knockout stage, Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan made several changes to his starting line up, giving opportunities to some fringe players in the team, with Lasheen no exception.
Lasheen will have to undergo a recovery programme, with the aim of preparing him for Egypt’s round of 16 match on Monday, 5 January, 2026, as confirmed by the Egyptian Football Association.
Egypt had already secured qualification for the knockout stage following back-to-back wins over Zimbabwe (2-1) and South Africa (1-0).
They finished top of Group B with seven points, one ahead of South Africa, who beat Zimbabwe 3-2 on Monday.
The Pharaohs will begin their round of 16 campaign against one of the best third-placed teams from the other groups.
