Egypt defender Mohamed Hamdy has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after sustaining a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the Pharaohs’ Round of 16 clash against Benin at the Agadir Stadium on Monday.
Following the match, medical examinations and X-rays confirmed the severity of the injury. Egypt national team doctor, Dr. Mohamed Abu El-Ela, disclosed that Hamdy suffered a tear to the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, an injury that requires surgical treatment.
As a result, the player has been excluded from the technical staff’s plans for the rest of the tournament, dealing a significant blow to Egypt’s squad as they continue their AFCON 2025 campaign.
Africasoccer understands that the Egyptian Football Association is currently stepping up efforts to secure a travel visa for Hamdy to Germany, where he is expected to undergo surgery on the injured ligament before commencing a structured rehabilitation and treatment programme.
