The Egyptian national team issued an official response to South Africa coach Hugo Broos after he claimed Mohamed Salah told him Egypt’s winning penalty “was not correct” following their AFCON 2025 clash.
Egypt beat South Africa 1–0 thanks to a first-half spot-kick scored by Salah, which he won himself in the 45th minute of the Group B encounter in Morocco.
In a firm statement, national team media officer Mohamed Murad moved to shut down Broos’ version of events. Posting on his Facebook account, Murad said: “Mohamed Salah did not speak with the South Africa coach about any matters related to the match. Everything that happened was limited to greetings and a handshake only, and everything being circulated beyond that has no basis in truth.”
The clarification came after Broos had stirred controversy by suggesting Salah privately questioned the penalty decision.
With the win, Egypt secured early qualification for the last 16, reaching 6 points and sitting top of Group B, while the debate around the spot-kick continues to dominate post-match discussion.
