Egypt have suffered a major blow at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with defender Mohamed Hamdi ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to an injury setback.
The 30-year-old, who is in the books of Pyramids FC was handed a starting role in the crucial game against Benin on Monday, held at the Stade d’Agadir in Morocco.
The experienced midfielder was in discomfort after colliding with a Benin player and had to be replaced by Ahmed Abou El Fotouh in the 46th minute, just before the end of the first half on Monday.
Before being substituted, the Pyramids marksman had showcased great performance in the midfield for the Pharaohs, who are keen on securing their eighth AFCON title in Morocco.
However, Mohamed Abou El-Ela, who is the team doctor for Egypt has confirmed a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), ruling him out of the tournament.
“The scans carried out on Mohamed Hamdy confirmed a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee,” Abou El-Ela confirmed.
His absence comes at a crucial time for the Pharaohs, who are preparing for a tough quarter-final encounter. Egypt will face the winner of the match between Burkina Faso and defending champions Ivory Coast on Saturday.
