The Egyptian national team staff, led by coach Hossam Hassan, have clarified the status of wingers Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet of Al Ahly and Ibrahim Adel of Al Jazira ahead of the AFCON 2025 group opener against Zimbabwe.

Egypt will first play a friendly against Nigeria at Cairo Stadium as final preparation for the tournament hosted by Morocco from 21 December to 18 January.

Team manager Ibrahim Hassan told the Egyptian FA’s media center that the staff decided to rest Trezeguet from Monday’s training session and from the Nigeria friendly. The winger underwent treatment after complaining of severe tooth pain, but the staff confirmed he will be available to face Zimbabwe as planned in the first match of Group B.

Hassan added that Ibrahim Adel has joined up with the national team camp but is recovering from an ankle sprain suffered while playing for his club in the UAE Cup.

He explained that Adel will also be ready to participate against Zimbabwe, but like Trezeguet, he will sit out the friendly against Nigeria to avoid any risk before the start of Egypt’s AFCON campaign.
