Former Egypt captain Ahmed Hassan has expressed confidence that the current national team has the quality to lift the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy.
The Pharaohs began their campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe, setting a positive tone for the tournament.
In an interview with CAFOnline.com, Hassan highlighted the talent within the squad, recalling Egypt’s recent AFCON final appearances in 2017 and 2021, and emphasized that team cohesion will be crucial in their pursuit of continental success.
“This generation is talented and has many outstanding players. They came very close but were unfortunate not to win the title. The opportunity is still there for them, and I am proud to have been part of the generation that won three successive AFCON titles,” said Hassan.
Looking ahead to Egypt’s next group B match against South Africa — the team that eliminated them in the 2019 quarterfinals on home soil — Hassan remained confident in the Pharaohs’ credentials.
“The next game against South Africa will be tough — they are a strong team — but we are still Egypt. If we are worried about them, they should be a hundred times more worried about us,” he added with confidence.
Egypt will face South Africa on Friday at 16:00 GMT at the Grande Stade D’Agadir.
