Good evening, and welcome to the live text coverage for the bronze medal match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Record champions Egypt face Nigeria’s Super Eagles this evening in the third-place play-off match of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 at the Stade Mohamed V.

With continental pride and a bronze medal at stake, both sides aim to end the tournament on a high note after falling short of reaching the final.

Egypt arrive in Casablanca still recovering from their narrow 1–0 semi-final defeat to Senegal in Tangier, which ended their hopes of an eighth continental title. Head coach Hossam Hassan insists the tournament has offered valuable lessons, especially with the FIFA World Cup approaching.

The Pharaohs reached the last four unbeaten, including a dramatic 3–2 quarter-final victory over defending champions Côte d’Ivoire. However, their cautious approach against Senegal left them short of attacking opportunities, producing just three shots in 90 minutes. Despite that setback, Egypt remain focused on finishing on the podium and refining tactical systems tested throughout the competition.

Much of the attacking responsibility will once again fall on Mohamed Salah, who has scored in four of Egypt’s six matches and remains in contention for the Golden Boot, just one goal behind Morocco’s Brahim Díaz. After a largely isolated semi-final performance, the Liverpool forward will be determined to make his mark.

Nigeria’s journey to the play-off has been equally compelling and painful. After winning all five of their opening matches and scoring a tournament-high 14 goals, the Super Eagles were stopped by hosts Morocco in the semi-final. A goalless 120 minutes in Rabat, followed by a 4–2 defeat on penalties, ended their hopes of back-to-back finals.

Head coach Éric Chelle has urged his players to respond with professionalism, viewing the third-place match as unfinished business rather than consolation.

Here is how the two national teams lineup for today’s showdown.

We are just 30 minutes away from kick-off.

With pre-kick off rituals done, let the game begin.

33′ Raphael Onyedika (Nigeria) holds his opponent to prevent him from getting the ball and the referee blows for a foul after seeing the whole situation.

34′ Mohamed Hany (Egypt) sends a long ball forward to Mostafa Mohamed, but he put too much power and the chance is gone. The ball is off of the pitch and it’s a goal kick for Nigeria.

36′ A perfect lofted pass from Samuel Chukwueze finds Akor Adams (Nigeria), who jumps highest and steers a close-range header to the middle in the countermovement of the keeper. His effort was both strong and precise, and Oufa Shobeir had no chance of stopping that. 0:1.

38′ Houston we have a problem. VAR is reviewing a possible foul before the goal. The goal is chopped off. Onuachu is shown a yellow card for elbowing a defender.

Second Half:

46′ We are back underway. Eric Chelle has decided to make a substitution during the half-time break. Ademola Lookman comes on the pitch for Paul Onuachu (Nigeria).

47′ GOAL DISALLOWED! Controversy and anger as Ademola Lookman (Nigeria) has a goal ruled out, incredibly, for offside.

50′ Raphael Onyedika (Nigeria) sets himself up and has a crack at goal from the edge of the box. The shot heads low to the middle of the goal, but Oufa Shobeir tracks it all the way and makes an easy save.
55′ Mohamed Salah (Egypt) is clearly in an offside position and the linesman raises his flag.
60′ Zizo puts Emam Ashour (Egypt) in the clear, but he completely fluffs his lines from mid-range and sends a shot well wide of the left post. The ball goes out of play and Nigeria will have a goal kick.
62′ Bright Osayi-Samuel (Nigeria) is clearly asking for some medical attention with his painful gestures. The extent of his injury is yet to be discovered.
64′ Omar Marmoush (Egypt) is penalised for holding. Jalal Jayed signals a set piece.
65′ Bright Osayi-Samuel is substituted due to injury. Eric Chelle gives a chance to Alex Iwobi (Nigeria).
66′ Hamdi Fathy (Egypt) should know this behaviour is beyond the rules. He was too careless with his challenge and left Jalal Jayed no option but to blow his whistle. A free kick to Nigeria.
67′ Samuel Chukwueze (Nigeria) takes the free kick and attempts to find some of his teammates inside the box, but the ball is intercepted and cleared out of danger.
71′ Jalal Jayed blows his whistle as Omar Marmoush (Egypt) used excessive force in the tackle during an attack.
75′ Moses Simon (Nigeria) shows too much aggression during an attacking move and ends up fouling his opponent.
80′ Omar Marmoush (Egypt) goes down in the box after a challenge from the defender. Possibly unsighted, the referee just waves play on.
84′ Khaled Sobhi (Egypt) requires medical treatment, so the referee stops play and signals for the physio to come onto the pitch.
87′ Igoh Ogbu (Nigeria) receives a harsh yellow card from the referee after committing a minor foul on his opponent.
90′ There will be a minimum of 4 min. of added time.
90+3′ Problems for Eric Chelle as Semi Ajayi is not able to play anymore. His injury is too serious and Chidozie Awaziem (Nigeria) replaces him.
90+7′ The second half has just finished. No goal after extra time. The battle for the bronze medal will be decided by penalties.
The shootout begins:
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru (Nigeria) was unsuccessful with his poor penalty attempt.
Mohamed Salah (Egypt) couldn’t focus enough and misses the penalty.
Goal! Akor Adams (Nigeria) takes just a short run up and buries the penalty into the bottom right corner.
We have witnessed a penalty fail, with Omar Marmoush (Egypt) the one who can hold his head in shame.
Goal! Moses Simon (Nigeria) runs up to the ball, stops and waits for Oufa Shobeir to commit before slotting the penalty into the bottom right corner.
Rami Rabia (Egypt) gives no chance to the keeper and converts the penalty with a sharp low drive into the left side of the net.
Goal! Alex Iwobi (Nigeria) slams home the penalty with a precise low shot into the bottom right corner.
Goal! Mahmoud Saber (Egypt) wins the battle of wills and sends an unstoppable penalty past Stanley Nwabali into left side of the goal.
Ademola Lookman (Nigeria) strikes a great penalty kick that ends up in the back of the net!
And that’s it. Nigeria have claimed the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Thank you for joining us for the live text coverage of the game. We are back on Sunday at 19:00GMT with the live text commentary for the final between Senegal and Morocco.
