AFCON 2025: DR Congo coach Sébastien Desabre focuses on group stage progress

DR Congo approach the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco with cautious optimism under the guidance of coach Sébastien Desabre.

The Léopards, who reached the semi-finals in the previous edition, aim first to navigate the group stage successfully.

Drawn into Group D, DR Congo face a challenging path that includes matches against Senegal and Benin.

Desabre emphasizes that progressing from this group remains the team’s primary objective, while leaving room for further ambitions once the group stage concludes.

“The main goal at AFCON is first to pass the group stage. Nothing is easy in Africa.

We will face Senegal and Benin, two very strong teams that deserve their qualification. After that, there will be other objectives, and especially areas to improve,” Desabre told Zfootball.

The coach highlights the team’s recent successes as evidence of progress. DR Congo eliminated Cameroon and Nigeria in the African playoffs for the 2026 World Cup, demonstrating the squad’s potential.

Desabre remains confident but measured, noting the importance of maintaining focus and consistency.

“Today, we know we have qualities, since we beat Cameroon and Nigeria. That shows we are progressing. Many players are barely twenty years old, and the future can be positive.

But we have to keep a cool head and understand that after one match, there is always another to play,” he added.

Desabre’s approach balances ambition with prudence, acknowledging both the team’s talent and the challenges of the tournament.

After a historic AFCON victory in 1974, DR Congo continue the pursuit of continental glory, hoping to add a second title to their record.

The Léopards now prepare meticulously for the tournament, aiming to combine experience, youth, and tactical discipline to make a strong impression in Morocco while taking the first step toward another historic achievement.
