AFCON 2025: Côte d’Ivoire set sights on fourth crown in Morocco

Côte d’Ivoire will head to Morocco for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2025 determined to defend their continental crown and secure a fourth title in their illustrious history.

With triumphs in 1992, 2015 and 2023, the Elephants are chasing a place among Africa’s most decorated footballing nations, alongside Ghana, Cameroon and record-holders Egypt.

Led by coach Emerse Faé, who guided the team to glory at AFCON 2023, the Ivorians boast a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging stars.

Among them is Simon Adingra, the 23-year-old Brighton winger whose dazzling pace and creativity earned him the Best Young Player award at the last tournament.

Faé, who assumed control of the team mid-way through AFCON 2023 on his 40th birthday, has since stamped his authority with a philosophy centred on possession, quick transitions and attacking intent.

Our focus is on maintaining a balance between offensive creativity and defensive organization. We encourage initiative and boldness in attack while ensuring stability at the back, he explained. His side netted 12 goals in six qualifying matches for Morocco 2025, underlining their attacking threat.

Though qualification was not without difficulties—Côte d’Ivoire finished second in Group G behind Zambia—the champions showed enough resilience to secure their place.

That fighting spirit mirrored their path to victory in 2023, where they overcame Senegal, Mali, DR Congo and Nigeria despite a turbulent start to the tournament.

Adingra is expected to be central to their campaign once more.

Capable of playing on either wing or through the middle, his speed, dribbling and precision make him a constant menace.

Faé has made no secret of his admiration: Simon Adingra is the future of Ivorian football. He has the potential to leave a legacy akin to Didier Drogba’s.

The Elephants’ AFCON history is rich with drama.

Their first title came in 1992 after an epic 11-10 penalty shootout against Ghana in Senegal.

In 2015, they repeated the feat against the same opponents, triumphing 9-8 on spot-kicks after another tense final.

Their 2023 victory, however, showcased grit and adaptability, qualities they will need again in Morocco.

With 25 appearances at the tournament and a current FIFA ranking of 46 (January 2025), Côte d’Ivoire enter the competition with pedigree and confidence.

Should they lift the trophy again, they will join Ghana on four titles, further entrenching their status among Africa’s footballing elite.

For their passionate fans, the Elephants’ campaign in Morocco offers more than a title defence, it is a chance to strengthen a legacy and reaffirm their place at the very summit of African football.
