Michel Kuka Mboladinga, widely known as “Lumumba Vea”, emerged as one of the defining figures of AFCON 2025, and the Algerian Football Federation has now chosen to formally honour his commitment and dignity during the tournament.
AFCON 2025 delivered drama on the pitch, but the stands produced images that carried equal emotional weight.
Among them stood Lumumba Vea, the iconic supporter of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who captured continental attention through a powerful and symbolic presence.
Dressed and painted as Patrice Lumumba, the historic leader of Congolese independence, he transformed himself into a living monument throughout the competition.
Lumumba Vea attended every match involving the Leopards and remained motionless for a total of 438 minutes.
He maintained that stance from the group stage through to the round of 16, where DR Congo bowed out after a narrow 1–0 defeat to Algeria following extra time.
When the final whistle sounded, emotion overtook the supporter, and images of his tears spread rapidly across social media platforms.
A brief sequence involving Algerian forward Mohamed Amoura sparked debate online.
Footage showed Amoura greeting Lumumba moments before collapsing in celebration, and some viewers misinterpreted the interaction.
Many Congolese supporters, however, rejected controversy and chose calm reflection.
Amoura quickly addressed the situation, explaining that he acted spontaneously and without awareness of the deep symbolism involved. He issued a public apology and expressed respect toward the Congolese supporter.
The Algerian Football Federation decided to respond with a clear and respectful gesture.
Determined to protect the values of unity and sportsmanship that define the Africa Cup of Nations, the federation organised a symbolic act of reconciliation.
Unable to meet Lumumba directly, FAF media officer Saïd Fellak travelled to Casablanca to deliver several gifts on behalf of the federation.
Lumumba Vea received a jersey signed by Mohamed Amoura, another signed by all members of the Algerian national team, and a symbolic financial gesture intended as support and recognition.
The Congolese supporter welcomed the initiative with grace and gratitude.
“I feel deeply honoured by this invitation from the Algerian Football Federation,” he said. He also downplayed the earlier incident, stating that Amoura’s actions reflected pure emotion after victory.
Lumumba further highlighted the historic bond between Congo and Algeria, underlining mutual respect between the two nations.
Through this initiative, the FAF reinforced a message of dignity, respect, and fair play.
AFCON 2025 gained another lasting memory, not through goals or trophies, but through humanity shared beyond rivalry.
