Head coach of Morocco, Walid Regragui, has said that Cameroon’s historical superiority over the Atlas Lions is a thing of the past as both teams’ gears up for the crucial quarterfinals clash.
The Atlas Lions narrowly defeated Tanzania to set up a gruesome quarterfinals clash against the Indomitable Lions, scheduled to take place at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Friday, January 9, 2026.
It promises to be a thrilling encounter, as both teams will be seeking for victory to secure a place in the semifinals of the continental showpiece.
Quizzed about Cameroon’s historical superiority over Morocco, Regragui said, “I know that very well, but the past is the past and we are now the new Morocco. The last match we played was in 2018 and we managed to win.”
“I played against Cameroon twice as a player, and I know that they are a team in top form at the moment and they will give everything because if they lose, they will not play a big game for about a year or two.”
“We will choose the best possible midfield line against Cameroon, and we want to win with our style of play regardless of Cameroon’s style. I expect the midfield battle to be important and intense.”
“Whoever makes fewer mistakes in a match like this will be the one to qualify, and I have complete confidence in the players.”
“According to the statistics, we are one of the best teams at exploiting set pieces, and we aim to continue doing so.”
“We accept criticism and pressure and we deal with it because we have players who know how to handle it. We cannot force all players to give interviews. Some of them do not want to communicate because they are disappointed by the comments. You cannot call them bad and then ask them to talk.”
“Tomorrow’s match will be different from the previous one because it is a knockout game, and I know the Cameroon team well and they will not allow the ball to be left for a long time.”
The winner of the Morocco-Cameroon match will play the semi-final against the winner of the Algeria-Nigeria match next Wednesday.
