The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has completed its investigation into the controversial Algeria vs Nigeria quarterfinal in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with final decisions expected in the coming hours, a source told Winwin.

This follows a second round of communication between CAF’s Disciplinary Committee and the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), which was asked to provide additional clarifications regarding the match incidents.

Algeria was eliminated after a 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in a match that sparked widespread debate over referee Isa Sy’s officiating. The Senegalese official faced criticism for denying Algeria a clear penalty and issuing multiple yellow cards to Algerian players, decisions that many felt undermined the credibility of African refereeing.

Following the match, the FAF issued a statement condemning the refereeing, describing the decisions as unacceptable and damaging to the image of African football internationally.

“The federation cannot ignore the refereeing decisions in the last match, which raised questions and caused widespread dissatisfaction, affecting the credibility of African refereeing and harming the image of African football internationally,” the statement read.

The FAF also confirmed that it had formally lodged a complaint with both CAF and FIFA, requesting a full investigation and appropriate action in line with regulations.

CAF disciplinary officials reportedly held a video conference with the FAF secretary-general on Saturday to discuss the behavior of three Algerian players—Rafik Boughlali, Luka Zidan, and Adam Zrekan—after the match.

The FAF expressed concern over CAF’s use of local media footage as evidence, arguing that it was unreliable. Officials requested that CAF rely on official, verifiable video from the tournament broadcaster or Marrakech Stadium cameras to ensure a fair review.

In defending its players, the FAF cited provocations from the referee and assistants, including a refusal to shake hands after the match—a gesture classified as racially offensive—and racist remarks directed at Anis Haj Moussa.

CAF’s forthcoming decision is expected to include financial penalties, but the FAF has warned it will appeal to CAF and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) should any severe sanctions be imposed.

The outcome will mark a significant moment in the tournament’s disciplinary history, highlighting the ongoing debate over officiating standards in African football.
