Benin captain Steve Mounié has set a confident and ambitious tone ahead of his side’s clash with Senegal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, insisting that the Cheetahs aim to deliver a strong performance and grow as a team, following their opening victory against Botswana.
Speaking during a pre-match press conference, the Beninese striker underlined the positive atmosphere within the squad after their successful start to the tournament.
Mounié stressed that the win provided belief and momentum, while also sharpening the team’s hunger for the challenges ahead.
“The mindset is very positive,” Mounié said. “The victory against Botswana gave us a lot of confidence.
We know we will face a very good Senegal team, but we want to play a great match and come out of it stronger.”
Rather than adopting a cautious approach, the captain made it clear that Benin approach the encounter without fear or inferiority.
He emphasised that his side will compete with ambition, believing that qualification remains firmly within their reach.
“I am not giving a defeatist speech,” he continued. “We can finish first or second in this group. We are going into this match to try to win it.
Senegal is a great team, but football remains football. Anything can happen on the pitch.”
Mounié also highlighted the importance of preparation and attention to detail, particularly in decisive moments that can shape the outcome of matches at this level.
He pointed to set pieces as a crucial area of focus for the Benin squad.
“Set pieces are very important details in a match,” he explained. “They can change everything.
We work on them a lot, both through video analysis and on the training ground. They can still make the difference.”
Beyond tactics, the 29-year-old striker reflected on the personal significance of leading his country at Africa’s biggest football stage.
He described his captaincy at the AFCON as a source of pride for himself, his family, and the nation.
“It is a tremendous honour,” Mounié said. “When I started my career, I never imagined experiencing something like this.
Being captain at the AFCON is a powerful moment for me and for the whole country.”
He concluded by reaffirming his leadership role within the squad, particularly his responsibility toward younger teammates.
“I try to stay close to the younger players, to advise them and share my experience. We want to progress together as a team.”
