A storm of criticism has erupted after an Algerian international was filmed mocking DR Congo’s famous “statue” supporter at the end of their AFCON 2025 clash in Rabat.
The scene was widely described by observers as “unsporting” and contrary to the spirit of fair play.
Footage shared by fans and photographers shows the Algerian player walking toward the stands and making taunting gestures at the Congolese fan, who had spent the entire match standing motionless in his now-iconic pose. Instead of ending with handshakes and mutual respect, the incident left many in the stadium angry, especially as the fan had not misbehaved and barely moves during games.
Social media users called the act a “moral fall” unbecoming of a player representing his country at a major continental tournament hosted by Morocco under the banner of sportsmanship and excellence.
Commentators argued that mocking a peaceful supporter who only came to back his team in his own special way shows frustration and “childish” behaviour.
Several sporting figures urged CAF to intervene and deter similar conduct, stressing that respect for opponents and their fans is at the heart of football, beyond scores and trophies.
