Algeria reached a new milestone in the Africa Cup of Nations history on Wednesday when they defeated Sudan with an emphatic 3-0 win in their opening match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The North Africans joined the prestigious “100 Club” by scoring three goals in their opening match of the tournament, bringing their total AFCON goal tally to exactly 100 since making their debut in 1968.

Algeria’s journey began modestly, with five goals scored in three matches at their first appearance, but the numbers steadily grew across subsequent editions of the competition.
Over the years, Algeria have produced varied attacking returns at the continental showpiece, including six goals in 1980, five in 1982, eight in 1984 and two in 1986. They added four goals in 1988 before enjoying a prolific 1990 campaign in which they scored 13 goals on home soil.
Other notable contributions came in 2004 and 2015 with five and six goals respectively, while another 13-goal haul was recorded during their triumphant 2019 campaign.
In more recent editions, Algeria scored one goal in 2021 and three in 2023, before opening AFCON 2025 with three goals against Sudan to complete the century.
The milestone further underlines Algeria’s strong pedigree at the Africa Cup of Nations. The Desert Foxes are two-time continental champions, having lifted their first AFCON title in 1990 and secured their most recent crown in 2019.
With a bright start to AFCON 2025, Algeria will be aiming to go all the way in the ongoing tournament.
