Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic has commended the performance of Burkina Faso despite defeat in their second group game at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Winger Riyad Mahrez star emerged as the hero as Algeria triumphed over the Stallions of Burkina Faso to secure qualification to the knockout stage of the continental showpiece on Saturday.
Mahrez converted perfectly from the spot, as Algeria cruised to a narrow victory over Burkina Faso in a high-stake clash. It was his third goal for the Desert Foxes at the tournament, having netted a brace against Sudan in their opener.
Speaking after the match, Petkovic praised Burkina Faso’s effort in the game despite falling short to his outfit.
“Initially, it was a very difficult match between two strong teams who fought fiercely for 90 minutes on the pitch” he told CAF’s website.
“We were a little better at taking advantage of the opportunities that came our way. I think Burkina Faso will be successful if they continue to play at the same level they did tonight.”
“I congratulate my team. Although our performance declined slightly in recent matches, we continued to work hard and achieved victory and qualification.”
The North African country currently sit top of Group E, accumulating six points, while Burkina Faso and Sudan are tied on three points each after two matches.
