Himad Abdelli will represent Algeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after years on the national team’s periphery.

The Angers midfielder earned the call-up from coach Vladimir Petkovic, reflecting his consistent club performances and exemplary attitude off the pitch.

Abdelli’s inclusion comes after a period of disappointment. Despite strong displays for Angers this season, he initially missed out on the 28-man squad announced by Petkovic.

The Bosnian coach defended the choice, citing technical considerations and squad balance rather than any lack of merit.

Petkovic likened Abdelli’s situation to that of Nabil Bentaleb, emphasizing readiness for future involvement.

“Abdelli? The reasoning mirrors Bentaleb. They must be prepared to join if necessary. Do we replace an Aouar or a Maza for Abdelli? It is a purely technical decision,” Petkovic explained.

Abdelli’s response to the initial exclusion drew widespread praise. Rather than voicing frustration publicly, he maintained a supportive and unifying stance.

On social media, he wrote: “Regardless of the choices made, the national team remains above all else. Everyone behind the team.

Strength and Honor.” His measured approach mirrored Bentaleb’s reaction, highlighting professionalism amid disappointment.

The midfielder’s patience has now paid off. Reports from reliable sources, including insider Mohamed Toubache-Ter, indicate Abdelli will join the squad as a replacement for an injured player, with Houssem Aouar’s absence creating the opening.

At 25, Abdelli finally steps into the continental spotlight, bringing his hard work, discipline, and fair play to Algeria’s AFCON 2025 campaign.

His opportunity now awaits. Abdelli faces the challenge of proving himself on Africa’s biggest football stage and cementing his place among Algeria’s top talents.
