Algeria secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday evening, with Adil Boulbina’s sensational strike in extra time sealing qualification to the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The tightly contested encounter saw both sides create chances in regulation time without finding the breakthrough. DR Congo came close midway through the first half when Cedric Bakambu burst into the box after an impressive solo run, only for Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane to produce a fine save to deny him. Moments later, Axel Tuanzebe rose highest from a corner kick but saw his header drift narrowly wide of the left post.
After the break, the Congolese continued to apply pressure as Chancel Mbemba reacted quickly to a rebound, though his effort was blocked by the Algerian defence. Algeria responded with moments of quality of their own, including a powerful long-range free kick from Riyad Mahrez that flew just over the crossbar. Ibrahim Maza later came close inside the area, rising to meet a cross but directing his header inches wide of the right-hand post.
With the match goalless after 90 minutes, extra time followed and Algeria began to push with greater urgency. Lionel Mpasi-Nzau was called into action to produce an excellent save, denying Fares Chaibi after the midfielder created space inside the box and drove a low shot toward the bottom corner.
Just as the contest appeared destined for penalties, Adil Boulbina delivered a moment of brilliance in the 119th minute. The Algerian attacker unleashed a stunning mid-range effort that soared into the top of the net, a strike of pure quality that ultimately decided the match.
The dramatic winner confirmed Algeria’s place in the quarter-finals, where they will now face the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
