OGC Nice striker Terem Moffi has earned a late invitation to join the Nigeria national team for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations following the injury to Victor Boniface.
The Bayer Leverkusen striker has been removed from the Super Eagles squad after suffering a groin injury, which rules him out of the tournament.
Boniface will travel to Germany to begin his treatment to correct the groin, which will see him out of action for six weeks or more as AfricaSoccer.com revealed yesterday.
Moffi was part of the 40-man preliminary squad but failed to secure a place in the final list that was submitted to CAF for the upcoming tournament.
The 24-year-old now gets the opportunity to play his very first Africa Cup of Nations tournament as a replacement for Boniface pending CAF’s approval and club clearance.
Moffi is having a decent campaign in the French Ligue 1 this season, having scored 6 goals and provided two assists in 16 appearances for Nice.
The former Lorient attacker has 12 international caps for the Super Eagles, where he has scored four goals, with two of them coming in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
The Super Eagles face Equatorial Guinea in their opening match of the AFCON on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at the Stade Alassane Ouattara in Ebimpe, Abidjan.
