As anticipation builds for the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ivory Coast, the proud host, reveals emblematic symbols that transcend the football matches, embodying the nation’s values and history. From the mascot to the official ball and anthem, each element has been carefully chosen to reflect the rich tapestry of Ivory Coast’s identity.
Pokou: The Official Ball
The official ball for AFCON 2023 has been named “Pokou” in homage to the Ivorian legend, Laurent Pokou. The inspiration stems from Pokou’s remarkable feat in 1970 when, in a match against Ethiopia, he scored five goals, securing Ivory Coast’s qualification and setting a record for the most goals in an African Cup of Nations match.
The POKOU ball, presented during the draw for the competition in Abidjan, incorporates the national flag’s colors—white, orange, and green—and integrates cutting-edge technologies to elevate the game.
Official Logo: Reflecting Ivorian Colors
The official logo of the competition, unveiled as the tournament approaches, is a graphical representation that mirrors the vibrant colors of the host country. Ivory Coast’s essence is encapsulated in this emblematic symbol, setting the tone for the 34th edition.
Akwaba: The Mascot
The mascot chosen for AFCON 2023 is named “Akwaba,” a term meaning “welcome” in the Twi dialect.
Representing the host country with an iconic elephant, “Akwaba” dons an orange jersey, green-white pants, and a distinctive black hat.
This mascot personifies Ivorian values such as hospitality, friendship, and generosity, becoming the face of the tournament to be held across cities—Abidjan, Bouaké, Korhogo, San Pedro, and Yamoussoukro.
Akwaba: The Official Anthem
The official anthem, “Akwaba,” is a musical masterpiece produced by a collective of globally recognized African artists.
Unveiled during the draw in Abidjan on October 12, 2023, the anthem carries the spirit of the 34th edition.
Composed by the Congolese musician Dany Synthé, the intercontinental collective includes the Ivorian group Magic System, Egyptian star Mohamed Ramadan, and Nigerian sensation Yemi Alade.
As Ivory Coast prepares to host one of the most captivating AFCON editions, these symbols promise to elevate the tournament, weaving together football and cultural significance in a celebration of unity and diversity.
