Ahead of the 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations, set to commence in approximately two weeks, Sébastien Desabre, coach of DR Congo, has conveyed his perspective on their objectives in the tournament.
In an interview with Jeune Afrique on December 25, 2023, Desabre emphasized that while supporters aspire to claim the title, the primary goal for the Leopards is to reach the quarter-finals.
He stated, “If we reach the quarter-finals, we will have succeeded in our tournament,” acknowledging the significance of progressing to that stage.
Desabre acknowledged the dreams of fans for a title victory but expressed the belief that reaching the quarter-finals would mark a successful mission.
He highlighted the unpredictable nature of knockout stages, stating that “And once in the quarter, anything can happen.”
Reflecting on the journey to qualification, Desabre characterized the team’s transformation from finishing last in their group qualifiers to topping the group as an exploit, underscoring the challenges overcome.
This marks Desabre’s second African Cup of Nations, following his previous participation in the 2019 tournament in Egypt while leading Uganda.
As the 20th edition of the AFCON approaches, the coach remains optimistic about the Leopards’ potential success in the competition.
The Frenchman will announce his final 27-man squad list for the tournament on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, during a press conference.
