The start of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations has been challenging for Senegal’s Lions of Teranga. Despite a convincing 2-0 victory over Tanzania in their opening match, the team faces a major setback ahead of their Thursday clash against Algeria. Striker Ismaila Sarr and midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye are reportedly sidelined due to injuries sustained against the physical Tanzanian side, leaving coach Aliou Cissé with a depleted squad.
Adding to Senegal’s woes, defender Salif Sané is also out for the remainder of the tournament. The Schalke 04 center-back, who had been highly effective this season with two goals and two assists in 40 matches, was forced off the pitch before the half-hour mark due to an ankle injury. His absence will be keenly felt, as Senegal loses both defensive stability and aerial strength at the back.
Midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye’s absence is another significant blow. The Everton star, known for his tireless work ethic, game-reading ability, and ball-winning prowess, was instrumental in controlling the midfield against Tanzania. With two assists in 33 Premier League appearances this season, Gueye’s ability to break up opposition attacks and provide transitional support will be sorely missed. Alfred Ndiaye is expected to step in, but replacing Gueye’s energy and consistency will be a tough challenge for the Lions.
The loss of Ismaila Sarr further compounds Senegal’s selection headaches. The Stade Rennais winger, who drew countless fouls and posed a constant threat down the flank, is expected to miss the Algeria clash. Diao Baldé Keita, known for his pace and fighting spirit, is likely to take his place. In 49 matches this season for Rennes, Keita has scored 13 goals and brings the speed and dynamism needed to maintain Senegal’s attacking threat.
With Sadio Mané having missed the first match due to suspension, Senegal will now face Algeria without three of their key players: Sané, Gueye, and Sarr. These absences will test the depth of the squad and force Cissé to rethink his strategies. Despite the challenges, the Lions remain determined to secure a positive result against the Fennecs and maintain their position as one of the tournament favorites.
Thursday’s match is not just a test of skill but also of resilience for Senegal. With critical players missing, the team will need tactical flexibility, collective effort, and leadership from their available stars, including Sadio Mané, to overcome Algeria and continue their pursuit of AFCON glory.
