Burundi encouraged despite late defeat to Tunisia ahead of AFCON debut
Burundi were narrowly defeated 2–1 by Tunisia on Sunday in a friendly match as part of their preparations for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite the loss, the Swallows delivered a promising performance against one of the continent’s strongest sides, offering hope ahead of their historic first appearance at the tournament.
After a tightly contested first half, Tunisia broke the deadlock in the 66th minute through Taha Yassine Khenissi. Refusing to give up, Burundi responded ten minutes later when Cédric Amissi produced a fine finish to level the score. Just as the match appeared to be heading for a draw, Naïm Sliti struck in stoppage time, scoring in the 93rd minute to secure victory for the Carthage Eagles.
Despite the disappointment of conceding so late, Burundi head coach Olivier Niyungeko drew many positives from the performance, highlighting both the progress of his team and the areas still needing improvement.
“It was a good preparation match for our young team, which is about to experience its first Africa Cup of Nations finals,” he said. “It was also a real test against a top-level side that recently defeated the World Cup runners-up. This match allowed us to better assess where we stand.”
The coach also noted that this defeat ended an impressive unbeaten run.
“Burundi had not lost since 2017. Some difficulties remain, particularly in attack, and there are shortcomings we must correct. But the players are applying themselves and continuing to grow,” he added.
Burundi will soon travel to Egypt to take part in the first AFCON finals in the nation’s history. Led by their star striker Saïdo Berahino, the Swallows will aim to make a positive impression in a challenging group that includes Nigeria, Guinea, and Madagascar.
Their campaign will begin on June 22, when they face Nigeria in what promises to be a demanding opening test.
