Mali enters the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations eager to improve on past performances. The Eagles’ best showing came in 1972, when they reached the final, but despite being a consistently strong team, Mali has yet to claim an AFCON title. After a disappointing first-round exit in 2017, the team is determined to make a deeper run in Egypt.
Since September, interim coach Mohamed Magassouba has been tasked with steering Mali through the tournament, following the departure of Alain Giresse. The responsibility is significant, as expectations are high for a team that has historically been considered a strong contender on the continent.
Mali qualified for their 11th AFCON in 2019 by finishing first in Group C of the qualifiers, amassing 14 points and edging out Burundi, Gabon, and South Sudan. This solid performance reflects the team’s competitiveness and the progress made under Magassouba’s leadership.
The squad boasts talented players capable of influencing the outcome of the tournament. Striker Moussa Maréga of FC Porto enters the competition on the back of an exceptional season, having scored 19 goals and provided six assists in 42 matches. Midfielders Diadié Samassékou of RB Salzburg and Amadou Haidara of RB Leipzig will be tasked with creating opportunities and driving the team forward, using their creativity to support the attack.
Mali will open their 2019 AFCON campaign against Mauritania on Monday, June 24, at 8 p.m. GMT. With a blend of experience, talent, and tactical guidance from Magassouba, the Eagles aim to go beyond previous limitations, striving for a strong start and a memorable tournament in Egypt.
