Uganda, one of the surprise packages of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, arrives in Egypt determined to make an impact. The Cranes face a challenging path in Group A, drawn alongside hosts Egypt, Zimbabwe, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Success in this tough group will require focus, discipline, and bold performances.
Uganda will open their tournament campaign against DR Congo, a match that head coach Sébastien Desabre considers pivotal. Speaking to Kawowo Sport, Desabre emphasized the importance of a strong start. “The match against DR Congo is the most important for us. Our first match can determine our fate. We have to win the match against Congo to be able to play the rest of the matches with less pressure,” he explained, highlighting how crucial momentum will be for the team’s confidence.
Desabre also underlined the ambitious mindset he expects from his players. “Our ambitions are so high. And to win, you have to take risks. I told my players to play with confidence and take risks while attacking. To win, you have to win, which means taking risks,” he added. His message stresses both courage and initiative, encouraging the Cranes to assert themselves on the field rather than adopt a cautious approach.
Preparation for the tournament has been intensive, and Desabre is confident in his squad’s readiness. “My ambition is to write a good story with my team. We did some very good things during the preparation and the motivation is very high,” he noted. The coach sees the AFCON as an opportunity not just for short-term results but for establishing a lasting legacy, with improvement over past performances as a key goal.
While Uganda aims to achieve immediate success, Desabre is also focused on measurable progress. “We expect good results from here, but the main objective is to improve on Uganda’s previous result at the AFCON; then we can aim higher,” he stated. This approach balances ambition with realism, recognizing that a well-prepared, motivated team can surprise even the continent’s traditional powerhouses.
As the Cranes take on DR Congo and the rest of Group A, Desabre’s guidance and the team’s willingness to take risks will be crucial. With confidence, preparation, and determination, Uganda aims not only to advance from the group stage but also to leave a lasting impression in their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations debut.
