For the first Africa Cup of Nations featuring 24 teams, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has adjusted the budget to reward participating nations and the eventual champion. The move comes as part of CAF’s effort to make the continent’s premier football tournament more attractive, competitive, and financially rewarding for all teams involved.

Each of the 24 qualified teams will receive an initial participation bonus of $600,000, ensuring that even those eliminated in the early stages benefit from competing on Africa’s biggest stage. In addition, the tournament winner will be awarded $4.5 million, a significant increase from previous editions. This boost in prize money aims to incentivize teams to perform at their best and to heighten the prestige of lifting the AFCON trophy.

“This year, we have decided to increase the prize money for the competition,” said CAF President Ahmad Ahmad in an interview with RFI, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to enhancing the tournament’s profile and supporting participating nations. The increased rewards are intended not only to recognize excellence but also to provide financial resources that teams can reinvest into development, training, and preparation for future competitions.

The 32nd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations opens on Friday, June 21, with the host nation Egypt taking on Zimbabwe in the inaugural match. The tournament will run until Friday, July 19, culminating in the grand final, which will determine the champion of Africa. With 24 teams now competing, CAF has also adapted the tournament format to accommodate the expanded field, adding excitement and opportunities for emerging footballing nations to make their mark.

By increasing both the participation and winner’s prize money, CAF hopes to raise the level of competition and reward teams for their achievements on and off the pitch. The financial incentives underscore the growing professionalism of African football and the Confederation’s goal of making AFCON a landmark event for players, fans, and member associations alike.

This edition of the tournament represents a historic step forward for African football, not only in terms of the number of competing nations but also in the way the competition rewards success and participation. The increased prize money ensures that teams have tangible incentives to perform, while also highlighting the Confederation’s commitment to investing in the sport’s development across the continent.
