Nigeria Without Captain Vincent Enyeama for AFCON Qualifier Against Tanzania
Nigeria will be without their long-standing captain and goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama for their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania, scheduled for next weekend in Dar es Salaam.
The Lille shot-stopper has withdrawn from the squad due to personal reasons following the loss of his mother. The tragic news has left a void in the Super Eagles’ line-up, as Enyeama has been a key figure in the national team for over a decade.
In Enyeama’s absence, new coach Sunday Oliseh will turn to Carl Ikeme, the Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper, who has received his first call-up to the Nigerian national team. The 29-year-old, who plays in the English Championship, is expected to start between the posts in what will be a crucial match for Nigeria’s AFCON qualifying campaign.
Despite grieving, Enyeama expressed his support for the national team on social media, showing unity with his teammates as they prepare for the important fixture.
Nigeria currently aims to bounce back and secure a place in the 2017 tournament in Gabon, and the encounter with Tanzania marks a significant test early in Oliseh’s tenure.
