Senegal Faces Uncertainty Over Pre-AFCON Qualifier Friendly
Senegal’s preparations for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers have hit a snag, with growing doubts surrounding whether the Lions of Teranga will play a friendly match ahead of their opening qualifier against Burundi on June 12, 2015.
Initially, the Senegalese Football Federation had lined up potential sparring partners, including Angola and Burkina Faso. However, Burkina Faso ultimately chose to face Cameroon instead, leaving Angola as a possible option. But the Angolans preferred the match to be played in France—an arrangement Senegal is reluctant to accept.
“We prefer not to play in Europe,” a federation official told Wiwsport. “The first qualifying match against Burundi will be held in Senegal, so it’s not relevant to travel to Europe for a warm-up.”
The final call now lies with national coach Aliou Cissé, who is expected to meet the press on Friday to lay out his plans. The Federation has passed on all requests to the former Senegal captain and current technical staff.
“It’s up to Aliou Cissé to decide whether or not to play this match,” the source added. “In collaboration with the national technical director, Mayacine Mar, he will determine if it’s appropriate.”
One of the key considerations is the fitness and availability of players. Most are nearing the end of grueling seasons with their clubs across Europe and elsewhere, and there are concerns over potential fatigue or injuries in a low-stakes friendly.
“The coach may find it inappropriate to schedule a friendly,” the official continued. “Given that the players will have just completed long club seasons, he might prefer to focus on recovery and tactical preparation before the competitive fixture.”
With Burundi coming to Dakar for the opening Group M clash in June, Senegal’s technical team will need to strike a delicate balance between maintaining competitive rhythm and managing player welfare.
A decision on the potential friendly is expected within days.
