AFCON 2017 Qualifiers: Central African Republic Stun DR Congo in Emotional Victory
By BBC Sport Africa
The Central African Republic produced one of the standout results of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign so far, defeating DR Congo 2-0 on Sunday in Bangui in a spirited performance that defied expectations and ignited local pride.
In what was their first true home game in over two years due to the country’s fragile socio-political situation, the “Fauves du Bas-Oubangui” rose to the occasion in front of their fans, silencing one of the group’s favourites and reminding the continent of their resilience both on and off the pitch.
All the damage was done in the first half, with goals from Vianney Mabidé and Junior Gourrier giving the hosts a shock but well-deserved lead. Mabidé struck first with a well-placed effort before Gourrier doubled the advantage before half-time, sending the home crowd into celebration.
For the Leopards, the match was a major setback. After winning their opening game, they were considered strong contenders in Group B. But the defeat in Bangui — their first to CAR in three years — was a reality check.
Coach Florent Ibenge made changes at half-time, pulling off Rémi Mulumba and Chris Mavinga in hopes of sparking a response. But the substitutions did little to alter the rhythm of the game. The Central African Republic continued to threaten, and only the sharp reflexes of goalkeeper Ley Matampi Mandanda prevented the scoreline from worsening.
The Leopards were outplayed in key moments, and the result leaves them trailing in second place behind CAR in Group B.
The upset comes on the same day Angola were held to a goalless draw by Madagascar, tightening the group standings. The Leopards will now prepare for a crucial clash against Angola, while Madagascar will face a resurgent Central African side full of confidence.
This victory — equal parts footballing triumph and emotional release — represents more than just three points for the Central African Republic. After years of conflict and instability, their national team has offered a moment of unity and pride. As the AFCON 2017 qualifiers continue, the Fauves du Bas-Oubangui have proven they are not to be underestimated.
