AFCON 2017: Egypt, Morocco Eye Friendly Ahead of Qualifiers
North Africa’s footballing heavyweights are stepping up their preparations for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with Egypt and Morocco exploring the possibility of a friendly match ahead of June’s opening fixtures.
According to reports in the Moroccan press, the Egyptian Football Association has reached out to its Moroccan counterpart to arrange a warm-up fixture before the first round of qualifiers scheduled for the weekend of 12–14 June. The move underlines the importance both nations are placing on fine-tuning their squads after missing out on recent continental success.
Egypt, the record seven-time champions of Africa, were absent from the last three editions of the tournament and are determined to make a strong comeback. Now under the guidance of Argentinian coach Héctor Cúper, the Pharaohs are drawn in Group G alongside Nigeria, Tanzania, and Chad—arguably one of the most competitive groups in the qualifying campaign.
Cúper, who took over the national team in March, is believed to have turned down invitations for friendlies against Gulf nations, opting instead to test his squad against African opposition in preparation for what lies ahead.
“We need matches that simulate the real challenges we’ll face in qualifying,” said a source close to the Egyptian FA. “That’s why Morocco would be the ideal opponent—technically strong, tactically sound, and geographically relevant.”
Morocco, who were reinstated by the Court of Arbitration for Sport after being sanctioned by CAF for withdrawing as hosts of the 2015 edition, are also eager to reassert themselves on the African stage. The Atlas Lions, coached by Badou Zaki, are currently restructuring their squad and are actively seeking competitive matches to evaluate potential additions, particularly among Europe-based dual nationals.
Despite the willingness from both federations to go ahead with the friendly, the main sticking point remains the location. Negotiations are ongoing, with both Cairo and Casablanca considered, but neither side has confirmed the venue.
The fixture, if finalised, would offer a vital opportunity for both coaches to assess their teams under pressure. With less than two months remaining until the qualifiers begin, it may prove to be one of the last chances for players to impress and cement a spot in the starting eleven.
